I'll be posting some ideas for a race I have been thinking of. Feel free to read along and comment suggestions or feedback.
Everything is subject to change.
Forgive me if it seems unorganized and scattered, im just listing all my ideas atm. Brain Storming
NAME
Something with suffix -lith, or prefix petro-? Viviliths? Petroforms?
PHYSIOLOGY
General physiology
--Biolithic silicon based life forms, They are organic, but their body naturally produces a tough outer shell made of stone. Possibly cold blooded. - This would require some natural resource inside the being's body, generally produced from diet. Calcium is a common element for natural armored creatures. With them being rock creatures, they could totally get this from eating chalk or other rocks. There's actually a disease, the name escapes me, where (scloraderma?) the skin calcifies into a hard hide. hmm Maybe I can look it up, perhaps rather than being a disease, it could be something that they have control over in their body. The mitochondria was once a bacteria that united with cells , So it wouldnt be that far off to say that a disease like that one could have united with the dna of the stone folk to give them this stone armor generating ability. The disease is a genetic disorder, an autoimmune disease. That would make sense. Oh. well. Idk, if anything we can still find a way to integrate it. if we go with that option. Definitely. Now, the silicon-base would be more utile for the entirely rock option, reading this article. So no fleshy bodies beneath?
Their inner bodies are silicon based, but the shells are carbon based. They acquire the carbon through diet, they can eat stone to acquire carbon. Also, their shells grow in layers. Every year, their bodies absorb the inner layers and shed the outer layers. Then their body constructs a new shell, and using what they absorbed from the inner layers, the new first layer is stronger than the previous first layer, each first layer being stronger than the last.
SKELETAL STRUCTURE?- LOOKING FOR A MATERIAL HARD ENOUGH TO CRUSH ROCK FOR TEETH, YET DOES NOT CONDUCT HEAT ENOUGH TO KILL THEM SHOULD THEY DECIDE TO TAKE LAVA BATHS
Released Stonefolk
When they are threatened they can discard their armor to suddenly become exponentially faster. This is usually used to escape from dangerous situations. Unfortunately, this only lasts twenty minutes, then their bodies go under the metamorphosis phase where they begin to regenerate all their armor. This is extremely painful for them and they become almost immobile for a week. Their next armor is also very weak compared to their previous armor, as they did not reabsorb the first few layers of their armor as they normally would, so their body draws upon only what they eat during that time.
Elite Soldiers: Lava-bathed Stonefolk
-Some soldiers can opt to spend a year in pods of highly pressurized lava, which causes their stone armor to condense and harden. When they emerge, their stone armor becomes permanently bonded to their bodies. They gain maximum durability, heightened strength, as well as the ability to channel fire through their bodies naturally, but in exchange, they lose: the ability to regenerate their armor should it break, their "true" identity, as their face masks becomes bonded to their faces, the ability to reproduce, and many other downsides.
-BIRTH: Not sure if they will reproduce like humans do or perhaps via egglike stone pods?
-DEATH: Upon dying, their stone plates fall off and their bodies petrify, turning completely into stone. They do not decompose. Lava bathed stone folk do not lose their plates, they simply petrify on the inside.
CULTURAL STAPLES
True Faces
They have two faces. They wear a mask, at all times, naturally grown from their bodies, made from stone, then they have their true face. To show ones true face is the ultimate act of trust.
Crystal Agriculture
One of the things unique to their race will be the agriculture of special edible crystals. They are tended to like crops. They also have normal agriculture, but these Crystals are more nutritious to their kind.
Stonecraft
Anything from art, to weapons, to armor, to furniture, they are skilled in the molding and sculpting of stone creations. Their knowledge of mineralogy makes them adept at knowing which stones would be best for what purpose, same as a woodworker would know what woods would make the best bows, and a metal worker would know which metals make the best swords.

RACIAL STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESS
Normal Stonefolk
Strengths
- Extreme Strength
- Extreme Durability (Increases with age)
- High resistance to extreme temperatures, they can walk through caves and swim in lava with minimal discomfort, ice and snow does little to them
- Slicing and stabbing attacks are about as effective as fighting a statue, at most they will chip off a piece, layer by layer..
- Highly resistant to electricity based attacks, their outer plates do not conduct electricity very well.
- Highly resistant to magical attacks, as magic does not transfer well into them
- Highly resistant to many poisons
- Vision in the dark
Weaknesses
- Cannot perform any sort of magic aside from their innate racial abilities
- Blunt force or crushing attacks can fracture and break plates.
- During their annual molting phase, they are very susceptible to physical attacks and temperature. Their bodies become very malleable and sensitive for two weeks.
- If a plate falls off due to breakage or injury, the exposed body part is just as susceptible, also for two weeks.
- Their eyes are very sensitive to bright lights, and if exposed and flashed, they can be temporarily or permanently blinded.
Lava-bathed Stonefolk
Strengths
- Increased Strength
- Greatly Increased Durability
- Impervious to temperature based attacks
- Slicing and stabbing attacks are even less effective. An attack that would once chip off a layer of armor, would now barely scuff the armor.
- Impervious to magic attacks (Not their second hand effects)
- Immune to poisons
- Sense of pain is greatly diminished
- Vision in the dark
- Pyromancy? Lava Manipulation? Some new ability?
Weakness
- No longer able to regenerate lost plates
- No longer able to reproduce
- Plates are no longer layered, rather, they are now unified into a single, hard layer.
- While blunt force attacks require MUCH greater power to break an armor plate, rather than simply fracturing a portion of the stricken plate, any serious fractures will result in a complete loss of that plate (as opposed to just a corner or piece of the edge.) And possibly a loss of limb.
- Due to being unable to molt and regenerate new plates, they can never again undergo the tempering process, this is the maximum of their natural ability. The only way to become stronger is through external modifications (worn armor, weapons)
- They lose the ability to show their "true face" as their face becomes bonded to the outer plate. Due to the cultural importance of their "true face" to give it up for strength is considered an immense sacrifice. The way they see it, they are literally exchanging their identity for strength.
- Sense of pain is greatly diminished (Listed in both strength and weaknesses because, although it can be an advantage, the ability to feel pain is a survival mechanism, an often vital one, which is now greatly reduced. So it has its negative sides as well
Released Stonefolk
Strengths
Weaknesses
Possible supernatural abilities.
-Earth manipulation (Geokinesis)
-A "psychic" connection with their shed plates, which they can control at will? Often fashioned in certain forms, shields, swords, orbs, rings/chakrams, spikes, plates, whips, masks, etc.
The Elite soldiers can possibly manipulate lava? or fire?
HABITAT
Large Sprawling stone-wrought cities in enormous caverns deep under ground. Normally the cities surround a long-dormant magma chamber, and underground lake nearby.
Strengths
- Greatly Increased speed and agility: No longer carrying the immense wait of their armor means that they suddenly become much more mobile, the strength needed to move a heavy body can now be applied to a much lighter body, allowing them to move faster, jump higher and be more nimble
- Increased Striking power: Due to the power of their muscles no longer being used to lift and move the heavy stone plates, it can be applied to their striking power as well as their speed.
- Can use their plates freely, and manipulate their forms freely as well until time runs out.
Weaknesses
- Greatly reduced durability: They become susceptible to all forms of damage, including cutting and stabbing.
- Sensitive to temperatures based damage: They can now be burned or frozen
- Time limit: After 20 minutes, their body becomes hypersensitive as it begins to undergo the armor growth process
- Unable to absorb the first layers of their armor, and can only take in the nutrients they can fit in by eating. The new first layer of their next armor formation will be few steps weaker than the last armor
