She didn't know what she was doing there.. here.. in this empty classroom. The room was of average size with desks pushed against the back wall and smelled of salty sweat and a tinge of dried blood. She fiddled with the square collar of the blue tunic she donned. She wasn't used to wearing such clothing and it felt strange against her tight covered legs. Why had she signed up? Well for one thing, she had come to realize she wasn't safe anywhere, not even at home. The once peaceful mundane world she lived in had burst, replaced by one where attacks could happen around any corner, murderers run free amidst the crowds, and horrors of the night terrorizing the people around her. She signed up because she was afraid and seeked for help. She wanted to be better prepared, to fight back and not be a burden. She wanted to not be afraid of life because what she really wants, is to live.
Loretta looked to the door with apprehension. She had never fought for anything in her life and here she was taking her first step into the waters of battles. Would she regret her decision today? Only time will tell. As echoing footsteps neared, she found herself straightening up and stood resolute to her spot. She hoped her will wouldn't waver as her instructor entered.

Valiya did not agree with Aleksandria's request, in fact she downright told her she would not do it. Yet, here the veteran was, striding down the halls of the combat college. In one hand, she gripped two wooden training swords, in the other, she held a small wad of paper and a pencil. Alek had 'requested'(in the manner she was wont to do that made it more a command than anything else) that Valiya teach their barmaid how to defend herself. Damned be Milova and damned be what happened there, Eoin could protect the girl just fine. Weren't they banging already? Shaking her head, she entered the room and flashed one of the papers. On it was written in big, bold letters, "I M VALIYA. I WELL TRANE YU TO FITE." It mildly annoyed her that she had to write out her thoughts. Valiya was not stupid, rather, she was simply mute. She could make signs better than Alek could fight and she knew how speak more eloquently than an archduke, at least, she used to. However, being a soldier did not afford much time for reading and writing, therefore she lacked in those areas. Tossing one of the wooden swords her direction, Valiya set aside her papers and removed a pack from her back. From within, she pulled forth two gambesons, one was her's, one was Alek's that Loretta would borrow. While Alek certainly had broader shoulders than Loretta, Alek was short. Valiya stood just shy of 6'3 and was powerfully built, anything made for her would be a dress upon Loretta. As Valiya took off her overcoat to don her gambeson, it would be overly clear to Loretta the cause of her silence. In addition to various, deep scars within her flesh, there stood out one among the rest. Her entire neck seemed to be one large mass of scar tissue, a horrific attack from Giants back up in Sodden Down left her speech and magically impaired. In most respects, she was exceedingly lucky to be alive. But being a mute, magically impaired soldier, forced to leave the military with little reading and writing ability and no trade skills did not help her situation. Thankfully, there was Aleksandria. Raising her blade, she took up a defensive posture and motioned for Loretta to do the same.

A hulking woman had entered the classroom, her eyes clearly portrayed her frustrations of having to come in and teach the sniveling whelp to stand her ground. Her body movements held restrained aggression and a piece of parchment was nearly thrusted upon Loretta. Large and legible letters were processed as she read and mentally sounded the words. I am Valiya. I will train you to fight. She nodded in understanding as Valiya tossed a wooden sword to her. She nearly took a double take as she flailed her arms out to catch the thing. She mumbled an apology and felt strange for violating the silence with her voice. She took the gambeson from Valiya and placed it over her head as it slid down her slender figure. As head poked out, she noticed the heavily scarred neck of her sparring partner. She unconsciously grabbed for her throat as mental images flooded her mind. A few moments later and Valiya was readying up and gestured for her to follow her led.
She mimicked to the best of her ability with the wooden sword at hand. She held her sword awkwardly in front of her with knees bent and apart. She felt silly and probably looked as much. She did however attempt to correct her grip on the sword as it seemed to place a strain on her wrists.

Valiya sighed, striding over to Loretta and gesturing, making silent, grunt-like movements as she moved close to the woman and began helping her fix her stance. Feet shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent in a comfortable lunge, right foot in front of left, one hand on her sword hilt, one resting at her side, Valiya cared not which. A few times, she stopped to make signs with her hands, but quickly stopped, reminding herself that very few people could even read, let alone understand a language of hand signals.
Stepping back, satisfied, Valiya gestured for Loretta to prepare herself before she took a shuffled step forward and made a small parry at Loretta's blade, quickly followed by second. Giving her a second to recover, she would then thrust her blade forward, aiming to jab the other woman in her stomach. Part of her tried to visualize Loretta as Alek, it made it immensely more entertaining to think that she was showing Alek the ropes. Valiya knew she was a better swordwoman than Alek, but she would never have the chance to prove it. Alek rarely had time for those things anymore...

Valiya sighed and Loretta seemingly shrunk almost as if she had deflated somehow. With help, Loretta moved her feet to be shoulder width apart, right foot in front of the left, with knees bent comfortably as if she were ready for anything. Valiya made sure Loretta held the wooden sword with one hand while her other kept to her side. Several times Loretta stared at Valiya's hands with confusion as they gestured this way and that, and several times Valiya stopped herself. Loretta knew she was trying to speak with her but the hand signs were lost on her.
Her new-found stance left her feeling ready and prepared for anything, like a coiled spring ready to burst forth. She held the sword tighter in anticipation when Valiya gestured for her to be prepared. She nodded and stuck to the position she had learned. Excited eyes observed Valiya's every movement.
"Hah!?" Loretta had cried out in surprise when their swords made contact and tapped together, the second tap pushed her sword away slightly and Loretta figured she would have to do the same back as- By the seven!! Loretta reacted quickly as Valiya thrusted her sword aimed at her belly. She brought her sword back swinging at the invading stick to bat it away from her. Whether it connected or not, Loretta stepped lightly to the side whilst turning her body about to avoid the object all together as she deemed the action to be a natural response. She had a stick in her hand for Sympati's sake!

Valiya stepped back and flipped her blade, a small smile stretching over her face, a small, gasping sound escaped her throat. It almost looked as though the woman was grinning while gasping for air, in actuality, she was laughing in the only way she still physically could. Very little sound escaped, but just enough tore through to give a hint to the fact that she was not completely missing her vocal cords, they were simply torn to irrepairable pieces; though whether that was better or not was arguable. Cracking her neck, she assumed the same defensive position she put Loretta in just a few moments before.
Reaching out with on hand, she beckoned the woman to come at her. Hopefully Loretta would attempt to copy her movements, two parry strikes and a thrust. She could not deny watching the much smaller woman have a minifreakout as she successfully blocked her opponent's blade was highly amusing. Perhaps this wouldn't be a complete waste of time, after all.

Loretta looked up to Valiya with bewilderment as she made some form of noise while grinning wide as air passed through. She was.. laughing! Loretta smiled a bit, more at ease at the sight, yet she couldn't put her finger on what was so amusing to her. Before she could further ponder on it, Valiya had stepped away from her entering the defensive position she was in not too long ago. She reached out and beckoned her to come. Loretta nodded and stepped forth in quick procession, her sword connecting with Valiya's before tapping it again like so, a parry. Nearly hopping back, Loretta readied her sword. With a quick step, she brought her sword forward thrusting it out to poke the woman's belly.
She didn't know what to expect after what she would assume be either a counter or a block. She did, however, minded the weight on her legs and made sure to stay balanced as to prepare against whatever Valiya might do.
